Recognized Single-Mode Fiber Types
Single-mode optical fibers are classified based on their dispersion and transmission characteristics, primarily following ITU-T standards:
- G.652: Standard single-mode fiber (non-dispersion-shifted fiber, NDSF), optimized for 1310 nm, widely used in legacy and modern networks .
- G.653: Dispersion-shifted fiber, designed to minimize dispersion around 1550 nm for long-distance transmission .
- G.654: Cut-off shifted fiber, optimized for low loss in the 1500–1600 nm range, suitable for long-haul applications .
- G.655: Nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZ-DSF), engineered to suppress four-wave mixing in dense WDM systems while supporting high-power signals . Other specialized single-mode fibers include dispersion-shifted fiber and nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber, which are modifications of the standard types to enhance performance in specific applications .
Excluded Types
Single-mode fiber classification does not include multimode fibers, which have larger core diameters (typically 50 or 62.5 µm) and support multiple spatial modes of light. Multimode fibers are used for short-distance communication and are fundamentally different in design and modal behavior from single-mode fibers . In summary, any fiber type that supports multiple modes or is designed for multimode transmission is not part of the single-mode fiber classification.
