Article Overview

An incremental input optical module is a device that converts mechanical motion into digital pulse signals using optical sensing, enabling precise measurement of position, speed, and direction.

Overview

An incremental optical module is typically a rotary or linear encoder that generates incremental pulses as it moves. It uses a light source and optical sensors to detect changes in position via a patterned disk or scale. The module produces two primary output signals, A and B, which are in quadrature (90° phase difference) to indicate both the amount and direction of movement. Some modules also include an index (Z) signal to mark a reference position .

Working Principle

The optical module works by shining light through a code disk or linear grating. As the disk rotates or the scale moves, the light is alternately blocked and transmitted, creating a series of high and low pulses. These pulses are then interpreted by a microcontroller or encoder interface to calculate position, velocity, and direction in near real-time . Quadrature decoding allows precise tracking of motion even at high speeds.

Optical Transmission Modules

For long-distance or noise-sensitive applications, incremental signals can be transmitted via fiber optic modules. For example, the LW213/LW214 system converts conventional incremental signals into optical signals for transmission up to 3000 meters, then reconverts them back to electrical pulses at the receiver. This ensures signal integrity over long distances and in electrically noisy environments .

Applications

Incremental optical modules are widely used in:

  • Industrial automation: servo motors, CNC machines, and robotic arms
  • Printers and plotters: precise paper or media positioning
  • Factory automation: conveyor systems and assembly lines
  • Motion control systems: monitoring speed and position of rotating shafts or linear actuators

Key Specifications

When selecting an incremental optical module, consider:

  • Counts per revolution (CPR): determines resolution (e.g., 50–2500 CPR)
  • Linear pulses per inch (LPI): for linear encoders (e.g., 20–360 LPI)
  • Output type: RS422, HTL, or push-pull
  • Maximum data rate: typically up to 2 Mbit/s for optical transmission modules
  • Number of channels: usually two for quadrature, with optional index channel

Summary

Incremental input optical modules provide high-precision, real-time feedback for motion control by converting mechanical movement into digital pulses. They are essential in applications requiring accurate position, speed, and direction monitoring, and can be enhanced with optical transmission systems for long-distance or electrically noisy environments.
