Article Overview
Air switches like SwitchAir can be installed in network cabinets to direct cool air to switches, improving airflow and preventing overheating.
Overview
Air switches or airflow management devices, such as SwitchAir, are designed to channel cool air from the cold aisle directly into network switch inlets while preventing hot exhaust air from recirculating into the switch. Proper installation ensures that switches operate within safe temperature ranges and maintains data center cooling efficiency .
Installation Steps
- Prepare the Switch and Rack
- Velcro tie the network switch power cords toward the center to avoid interference with the SwitchAir brush strip .
- Remove the lower mounting screws from each side of the rack front rails, keeping the upper screws in place .
- Install SwitchAir Channels
- Insert the SwitchAir channels into the open rack space at the same U height as the switch.
- Engage the SwitchAir rail tabs with the switch rails for support.
- Ensure the front mounting flanges are flush with the rack front rails and reinstall the screws removed earlier .
- Mount the SwitchAir Chassis
- Slide the chassis into the installed channels from the front of the rack.
- Secure the chassis with screws (not always included) to ensure stability .
- Verify Airflow Direction
- Confirm that the switch's fan modules are aligned with the cold aisle for intake and the hot aisle for exhaust.
- All fan modules must have the same airflow direction to prevent recirculation and hotspots .
Best Practices
- Hot Aisle-Cold Aisle Configuration: Place cabinets in alternating rows so that IT equipment intakes face cold aisles and exhausts face hot aisles .
- Clearance: Maintain adequate space around switches for servicing and airflow.
- Live Installation Precautions: SwitchAir can be installed while the switch is live, but take care to avoid contact with power cords .
- Compatibility: Ensure the rack and mounting hardware meet the switch manufacturer's specifications .
Benefits
- Directs cool air efficiently to switch inlets.
- Reduces the risk of overheating and thermal throttling.
- Enhances overall data center cooling efficiency by preventing hot air recirculation. By following these steps and best practices, network cabinets can maintain optimal airflow, ensuring reliable operation of network switches and extending their lifespan .
