AOCs combine optical fiber with integrated transceivers at each end, forming a single cable assembly that plugs directly into device ports like a copper cable . The transceivers inside the AOC handle E/O and O/E conversion, allowing the cable to transmit data as light while maintaining a plug-and-play interface . Key advantages of AOCs include:
- High-speed transmission (40G, 100G, 200G, 400G)
- Medium-distance reach (typically 1–30 meters, sometimes up to 100 meters)
- Immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI)
- Lightweight and compact design, ideal for high-density data centers
- Reduced port contamination risk, as the optical ports are integrated and sealed AOCs are particularly suitable for rack-to-rack or switch interconnections in data centers and HPC environments. However, if an AOC fails, the entire cable must be replaced, and the design is less flexible than separate optical modules with patch cables .
Direct Attach Copper (DAC) Comparison
DACs are copper twinax cables with fixed transceivers, offering low cost, low latency, and low power consumption for very short links (≤5 meters for 100G). AOCs extend reach beyond DAC limitations while maintaining high performance, but at slightly higher cost and power usage .

- Medium links (≈5–30 m): AOC provides a balance of reach, performance, and ease of deployment
