Step 3: Select the Measurement Mode
- UV-Visible Spectrometer: Choose the appropriate light source (deuterium lamp for UV, tungsten-halogen for visible) and set the wavelength range corresponding to the metal's absorption peaks .
- Mass Spectrometer: Select the ionization method (electron impact, inductively coupled plasma, or laser ablation) suitable for the metal sample . Adjust the detector and mass analyzer settings to resolve the expected mass-to-charge ratios.
Step 4: Measure the Sample
Insert the cuvette into the sample compartment for UV-Visible spectrometry, ensuring the light passes through the clear sides. For mass spectrometry, introduce the sample into the ionization chamber. The detector will measure transmitted, reflected, or ionized signals, which are converted into a spectrum showing absorbance or intensity versus wavelength or mass-to-charge ratio .
Step 5: Analyze the Data
Interpret the spectrum to identify metal types and concentrations. In UV-Visible spectrometry, compare absorbance peaks to known standards to quantify metal ions. In mass spectrometry, match the detected mass-to-charge ratios with reference spectra to determine elemental composition and isotopic distribution .
Step 6: Clean-Up and Maintenance
After measurements, remove the sample and clean the cuvette or sample holder. For mass spectrometry, ensure the ion source and detector are free of residues. Regular maintenance, including lamp replacement and calibration checks, ensures accurate and reproducible results . By following these steps, you can effectively use a metal spectrometer to analyze metal samples, whether in solution or solid form, and obtain precise compositional data.
