Article Overview
Wires in a distribution box are connected by following a structured sequence: phase to phase terminals, neutral to neutral bars, and earth to the earth link, ensuring proper protection and safe distribution.
Key Components and Wire Connections
A distribution box, also called a distribution board or breaker box, houses the main switch, circuit breakers, busbars, neutral bars, and earth bars, all enclosed in a protective casing to prevent accidental contact with live parts . The main switch (usually a double-pole MCB) receives the incoming power supply, and its output feeds the RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) for protection against leakage currents and electrical shocks .
Wiring Steps
- Input Connections: Connect the incoming phase and neutral wires from the main supply to the input terminals of the main MCB . Ensure the MCB rating matches the total load.
- RCCB Connection: Connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB. The RCCB output then feeds the individual load MCBs .
- Load Connections:
- For single-pole MCBs, connect only the phase wire from the RCCB output to the MCB input, and connect the neutral wire to the neutral bar .
- For double-pole MCBs, connect both phase and neutral wires from the RCCB output to the MCB input .
- Neutral and Earth Links: Connect all neutral wires from the loads to the neutral bar and all earth wires to the earth bar. The metallic enclosure of the box should also be grounded .
- Wire Arrangement: Strip wires properly, crimp or tighten them securely to terminals, and arrange them neatly using cable ties to avoid tangling and allow heat dissipation .
Safety Precautions
- Ensure the power supply is completely turned off and verified with a tester before starting .
- Use wires of appropriate gauge for the load and rated for the voltage of the system.
- Wear personal protective equipment such as insulating gloves and safety glasses .
- Test insulation resistance and circuit continuity after wiring to confirm proper connections .
- Use breakers and fuses with correct ratings to prevent overloads and short circuits .
Additional Considerations
- Choose a distribution box suitable for the environment: indoor, outdoor, residential, commercial, or industrial .
- Leave space for future expansion and ensure the box has proper ingress protection (IP rating) if exposed to dust or moisture .
- Label circuits clearly for easier maintenance and troubleshooting . By following these steps, the distribution box will safely distribute electricity to all circuits while protecting against overloads, short circuits, and electrical hazards.
